SA condemns coup attempt in Turkey

The South African government has expressed concern over the attempted coup in Turkey‚ saying it strongly condemns any attempt to seize power through unconstitutional means.

It also condemned the resolution of political disagreements through the use of force.


“This incident is a serious violation of Turkey's constitution.


“South Africa supports democracy and the rule of law and we are of the firm view that the will of the people must be respected‚” the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) said in a statement.

“The South African Government appeals to the people and all political leaders in the country to refrain from any violent activities that may further undermine peace‚ security and stability in the country. We urge all involved to adhere to non-violence‚ and to debate issues in a peaceful and inclusive manner‚” the statement said.
