Women's top seed Serena Williams advanced to the third round at the 2016 Rio Olympics on Monday, beating Alize Cornet of France, 7-6(5), 6-2. Williams looked in control for the first couple points, but Cornet quickly had her on the ropes and broke her multiple times. But when the first set ultimately came down to a tiebreak, Williams managed to take the win.

In usual Williams fashion, she went on to dominate the following set.

For whatever reason, Williams struggles against Cornet, the No. 49 player in the world. The two last met in 2014, but they played three times that year and Cornet came away with wins in all three of them, though Williams retired from the third at Wuhan. Williams had taken the first three meetings between the two, and they had a 3-3 overall record going into Monday's match.

United States women are officially out of doubles competition, with the team of Coco Vandeweghe and Bethanie Mattek-Sands falling in the second round on Monday. They lost to the team of Timea Bacsinszky and Martina Hingis, and join the team of Serena Williams and Venus Williams on the sidelines. The Williams sisters lost their opening round match on Sunday.

Bacsinszky and Hingis won the match in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.

The U.S. did get some good news in men's doubles, when the team of Steve Johnson and Jack Sock downed the team of Juan-Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6(1). Johnson is also competing in singles competition, the only American man left in that bracket. His next match will be played on Tuesday.

Then the U.S. got some bad news when the team of Brian Baker and Rajeev Ram fell in their second-round doubles matchup, losing to Oliver Marach and Alexander Peya.
