THE Court of Appeal today sentenced to death by hanging Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Christopher Bageni, but acquitted three others including Assistant Commissioner of Police Abdallah Zombe on charges relating to the killings of three mineral dealers and a taxi driver.

Other police officers whose acquittals were confirmed by Court of Appeal panel comprising Justices Bernard Luanda, Sauda Mjasiri and Semistocles Kaijage were Assistant Superintendent of Police Ahmed Makelle and Corporal Rajabu Bakari.

The police officers were charged with four counts of killing of the three mineral businessmen - Sabinus Chigumbi and his relatives Ephrahim Chigumbi and Mathias Lunkombe from Mahenge in Morogoro region, and Juma Ndugu, a taxi driver at Manzese area in Dar es Salaam.

Appeals Court findings follows an appeal lodged by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to fault the decision given on September 17, 2009 by then High Court Judge Salum Massati, who set free all the police officers in respect of the murder charges.
