The United States' Women's World Cup hopefuls enjoyed support from the Oval Office ahead of their last-16 victory over Colombia in Edmonton.

President Barack Obama barracked for his country via Twitter by posting a picture of him posing with a broad smile while holding a blue away strip bearing his name and the number 44.

The 1991 and 1999 champions followed their political leader's orders to the letter, claiming a 2-0 win over the South Americans helped by a red card to goalkeeper Catalina Perez when it was still 0-0 early in the second half.

Captain Abby Wambach missed the resulting penalty but Alex Morgan handed them the lead soon after and Carli Lloyd made no mistake when handed her chance from the spot for a tough victory.

Jill Ellis's side will be without midfielders Megan Rapinoe and Lauren Holiday when they face China in the quarter-finals after they picked up yellow cards.

The US is aiming to go one better than 2011 when they lost to Japan in the final in a penalty shootout. Their campaign got off to a perfect start as they advanced undefeated from what was considered a group of death with wins over Australia and Nigeria and a scoreless draw with Sweden.
