President Obama is set to interrupt his vacation to campaign for Hillary Clinton at a private event for wealthy donors.

Obama will headline a Democratic Party fundraising reception on Martha's Vineyard, in Edgartown, Massachusetts, on Monday evening.

He is currently enjoying a two-week vacation on the island with wife Michelle and daughters Malia and Sasha.

Democrats Hank Goldberg and his wife, Carol, are hosting the event at their home in Chilmark, the same town where the president is renting a vacation home.

Guests attending the fundraiser are asked to contribute between $10,000 and $33,400.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the Hillary Victory Fund, a joint fundraising effort aiding her campaign, the Democratic National Committee and state parties across the country.

Obama will deliver remarks at the event, but the media will not be permitted to hear his answers to questions asked by some of the donors in attendance.

The White House said the president is eager to hit the campaign trail and be as helpful as possible to fellow Democrats.

Obama recently said Clinton's opponent, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, is 'unfit to serve'.

The president said Trump's recent criticism of Muslim parents who lost their US soldier son in Iraq, as well as the candidate's lack of 'basic knowledge' about critical international issues 'means that he's woefully unprepared to do this job.'

Obama is expected to campaign aggressively for Clinton in the fall run-up to the November 8 elections.

At their first joint campaign appearance in Charlotte, North Carolina, in July, Obama said no one more qualified than Clinton has ever sought to become president.

He repeated the assertion at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia late last month, saying 'there has never been a man or a woman' more qualified than Clinton to serve as president.

Clinton, who will be making her first campaign appearance with Vice President Joe Biden in his hometown of Scranton, Pennsylvania, is not expected to appear with Obama on Monday.

On Sunday, Obama joined up with Chris Paul of the Los Angeles Clippers for a round at the Farm Neck Golf Club.

In the second round, it was Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors, and in his third and fourth rounds, Obama's foursome included former all-stars Alonzo Mourning and Ray Allen.
