BREAKING NEWS: EgyptAir's MS804 Airbus

BREAKING NEWS: EgyptAir's MS804 Airbus jet 'had been forced to make THREE emergency landings in the 24 hours before it crashed into the Mediterranean'

  •  EgyptAir plane carrying 66 on board crashed into Mediterranean on May 19

  •  French ship picked up black box signals from under Mediterranean Sea

  •  But devices only have enough power to emit signals for up to five weeks

 By Sara Malm for MailOnline

Missing EgyptAir flight MS804 had reportedly been forced to make three emergency landings in the 24 hours leading up to crash.

The Airbus 320 is said to have been forced to turn around shortly after takeoff on three separate occasions after it's warning systems signalled an anomaly onboard.

The claims, made in French media, have since been denied by the Egyptian lead crash investigation committee.

The airplane's onboard warnings system, Acars, went off shortly after take off from three airports where in the 24-hours before the crash, Euronews reports.

All alerts were reportedly investigated after emergency landings, with nothing found,

'We cannot presume to know know exactly what happened on board but it’s not entirely normal to turn around several times after a technical incident without finding anything,' Jean-Paul Troadec told TV channel France 3.

Mr Troadec added that 'Acars signals are emitted automatically only in the case of a malfunction. In normal mode they remain silent'.

The search zone for the crashed EgyptAir flight's black boxes has today been been narrowed to two kilometres (1.25miles) from five kilometres(3.1miles), a source on the investigation committee said.

The EgyptAir Airbus A320 crashed into the sea with 66 people on board during a May 19 flight from Paris to Cairo after disappearing from radar screens

This comes after French naval search vessel Laplace picked up signals believed to originate from one of the black boxes of flight MS804.

The Civil Aviation Ministry is citing a statement from the committee investigating the crash as saying the vessel Laplace is the one that received the signals.

The EgyptAir Airbus A320 crashed into the sea with 66 people on board during a May 19 flight from Paris to Cairo after disappearing from radar screens.

Locator pings emitted by flight data and cockpit voice recorders, known as the black boxes, can be picked up from deep underwater.

Investigators had been racing against time to find MS804's black boxes, as they only have enough battery power to emit signals for four or five weeks.

The recordings could help investigators determine the reason for the crash.

The plane was carrying passengers from different nationalities, with 40 Egyptians including the crew and 15 French nationals.

Egypt's aviation minister had initially said a terrorist attack was more likely to have brought down the plane, but a technical failure is also likely.

France's aviation safety agency has said the aircraft transmitted automated messages indicating smoke in the cabin and a fault in the flight control unit minutes before losing contact.

Egypt and France have signed agreements with two French companies specialising in deep water searches, Alseamar and Deep Ocean Search (DOS).

Picture on the official Facebook page of the Egyptian military spokesperson shows part of debris found by search teams looking for the EgyptAir flight
'Those two companies have complementary roles: the first is for locating the pings of the black boxes (the signal being emitted by the black boxes' beacon), while the second is for diving and recovering them' with the help of a robot, a source close to the investigation told AFP in Cairo, requesting anonymity.

'But the DOS specialised ship left the Irish sea Saturday and it will reach the perceived crash site only in around 12 days, after having the Egyptian and French investigators embark in Alexandria,' the source added.

The investigators are searching for the black boxes at a depth of about 10,000ft, some 180 miles north of the Egyptian coast.

Three of Alseamar's DETECTOR-6000 acoustic detection systems, which submerged can detect pings for up to 4,000 to 5,000 metres below sea level, have left the French island of Corsica to the crash site Thursday onboard 'Laplace', a French navy ship.

It will arrive at the perceived crash site 'Sunday, or Monday at the latest,' according to one of the sources.
'While we are waiting for the DOS ship, equipped for detecting the pings in deep waters, but more importantly the robots capable of descending up to 6,000 metres to recover the black boxes, we will not be wasting time as Leplace will be trying to locate them in the meantime,' said one of the sources.

The source added that after 12 days, 'there is a very good chance of recovering the flight recordings thanks to the combination of these two French companies.'

Two members of the French aviation safety agency BEA are on board Leplace.

Serena Williams eases past Elina Svitolina to reach French Open quarter-finals

  •  Serena Williams beat 18th seed Elina Svitolina 6-1, 6-1 in the fourth-round

  •  The defending champion needed just 62 minutes to beat the Ukrainian

  •  Williams to face Carla Suarez Navarro or Yulia Putintseva in the last eight

By Press Association

Serena Williams made up for lost time by racing into the quarter-finals of the French Open.

Having been unable to get on court for the past two days for her fourth-round clash against Elina Svitolina, conditions were finally dry enough on Wednesday to allow play to start on time.

And defending champion Williams needed just 62 minutes to beat 18th seed Svitolina 6-1, 6-1.

Conserving energy could well be the key to winning this title, with whoever reaches the final from the top half of the women's draw having to play four matches in four days.

The sky was resolutely grey and the court damp and heavy, not conditions Williams favours, but she was in total control from the start.

Svitolina is being coached part-time by four-time French Open champion Justine Henin, who twice beat Williams at Roland Garros.

But Svitolina does not possess Henin's finesse and it was not a happy 34th birthday for the Belgian as she watched her charge get demolished by the power of Williams.

The World No 1 reacts after cruising to a comfortable win after controlling from the very first point

The American won the first four games and it was not until early in the second set that Svitolina finally held serve.

The Ukrainian showed her frustration as the glimpses she had were snuffed out, with Williams saving seven of eight break points.

But this was as comfortable as wins come and Williams moves through to a last-eight meeting with either Carla Suarez Navarro or Yulia Putintseva.

Euro 2016 stadium guide

Euro 2016 stadium guide: Check out the venues in France that will provide a stage for all the drama this summer

  •  Euro 2016 starts on June 10 as host France take on Romania at the Stade de France in Paris

  •  England's opener against Russia is the following day at Marseille's Stade Veledrome

  •  Sportsmail provides a guide to each of the 10 venues which are hosting the tournament

 By Sportsmail Reporter

The squads are finalised, the planes are booked and the tickets have been sold. Euro 2016 gets underway in a matter of days and the excitement is rising.

France hosts its first major international tournament since the 1998 World Cup and Sportsmail has provided a detailed guide to the 10 host cities and stadiums providing a platform for the drama across the next month.

Sportsmail's guide to the 10 stadiums and host cities in France ahead of Euro 2016, which begins on June 10

Stade de Bordeaux (42,000) - Bordeaux

An area more famous for its wine than football, the capital of the Aquitaine region will be the picturesque venue of four group stage matches and a quarter-final.

Built at a cost of £146.5m, the new home of Bordeaux is located between a man-made lake and the Garonne river in the north of the city.

Chris Coleman's Wales face Slovakia on June 11 in Bordeaux and Belgium lock horns with Ireland on June 14 there.

Wales get their Euro 2016 tournament underway with a clash against Slovakia on June 11 at the Stade de Bordeaux
As well as hosting four matches in the group stage, the Bordeaux stadium will also be the venue for one of the quarter-final encounters

Stade Bollaert-Delelis (35,000) - Lens

Easily the smallest host city of Euro 2016, the rebuilt stadium could almost fit the entire population of Lens inside it. The Stade Bollaert-Delelis was
originally opened in 1933 and the latest renovation work was completed last August on the home of Ligue 2 side Lens. England v Wales is one of four matches being held there.

England and Wales will go head-to-head at Lens' The Stade Bollaert-Delelis in their Group B clash on June 16

Stade Pierre Mauroy (50,000) - Lille

This forward-thinking and cosmopolitan city has a stadium boasting a retractable roof and 50,000 capacity.

Open since August 2012, the stadium four miles south-east of the city centre is twice the size of Ligue 1 side Lille's previous homes and will host six matches during Euro 2016.

The most notable group games here see World Cup holders Germany begin their campaign on June 12 against Ukraine, while France face Switzerland in their final Group A clash and Italy take on Ireland on June 22.

Stade de Lyon (59,000) - Lyon

France's third-largest city has a stadium befitting that size and status, with the 59,000-seater Stade de Lyon opened at the start of the year.

Part of a complex stretched over 50 hectares, it replaces the Stade de Gerland, a 1998 World Cup venue, and will host one of the Euro 2016 semi-finals.

Lyon will host Northern Ireland's second group stage match of Euro 2016, against Ukraine on June 16, as well as the highly anticipated opener in Group E between Belgium and Italy.

Stade Velodrome (67,000) - Marseille

A £212m makeover has transformed the ground into a state-of-the-art home for Marseille. First opened in 1937, the pre-Euro 2016 makeover was done with the team still playing there and was finished in October 2014.

It has hosted matches at two previous World Cups and European Championships, with a semi-final the last match being held there this summer.

England open their tournament here on June 11 against Russia.

Stade de Nice (35,000) - Nice

France's most popular tourist destination away from the capital will welcome supporters to the eco-friendly Stade de Nice this summer. Opened in September 2013, the stadium draws over three times its own energy requirements from more than 4,000 solar panels.

It has its own geothermal installation for heating and rain water channelled from the roof is used to water the pitch. Defending champions Spain begin their tournament here against Turkey, as do Northern Ireland against Poland.

Parc des Princes (45,000) - Paris

A petition for a major football club to be established in the French capital drew 20,000 signatures and led to Paris Saint-Germain being founded in 1970.

Two years later their Parc des Princes home opened - the third stadium to have been built on the site.

Now with a boosted capacity of 45,000, the pre-Euro 2016 preparations have improved services for fans - welcome news to Northern Ireland supporters as their side face world champions Germany there.

PSG's stadium holds 45,000 people and will also host Germany against Poland on June 16

Stade de France (80,000) - Saint-Denis

Football became a major part of Saint-Denis facelift when a 80,000-capacity stadium was constructed to host the 1998 World Cup final.

It is has subsequently hosted a variety of sports and events, as well as becoming home of the French national team.

The Stade de France, six miles north of central Paris, will host seven matches, including the opening game and the final, and will be subject of heightened security after the terror attacks at the stadium in November.

The stadium is nicknamed as 'the cauldron' due the intense atmosphere that is associated with the venue

Stadium de Toulouse (33,000) - Toulouse

The smallest stadium in use at this summer's championships, it was nicknamed 'mini Wembley' shortly after it opened in 1937.

It hosted World Cup matches the following year, so too during the 1998 edition, and underwent upgrade work to get it ready in time for Euro 2016, when Wales' clash with Russia will be amongst four matches hosted there.

Spain also play Czech Republic in Toulouse and Italy play Sweden there.

Giggs to leave Manchester United:

Ryan Giggs set for Manchester United exit after rejecting club's offer of new role under Jose Mourinho

  •  Ryan Giggs is set to leave Manchester United after 29 years at the club

  •  Giggs made 963 appearances for United before joining backroom staff

  •  Welshman was assistant manager to Louis van Gaal last season

  •  Van Gaal was sacked after poor campaign and replaced by Jose Mourinho

  •  Giggs rejected role bridging between United's Under 21s and first-team

By Mike Keegan For Mailonline

Ryan Giggs looks set to end his 29 –year association with Manchester United by turning down a new role under Jose Mourinho.

The 42–year-old Reds legend was assistant manager to the sacked Louis van Gaal.

However, the club are understood to have offered the former Welsh international a lesser role under new boss Mourinho, and Giggs is now set to make the emotional decision to cut ties and seek a managerial position elsewhere.

GIGGS AT MANCHESTER UNITED

Debut: March 2, 1991 vs Everton
Appearances: 963
Goals: 168

Honours:

Premier League x 13
Champions League x 2
FA Cup x 4
League Cup x 3
Community Shield x 9
UEFA Super Cup x 1
Intercontinental Cup x 1
FIFA Club World Cup x 1

The Special One is expected to appoint his long-standing assistant Rui Faria as his No 2.

United have declined to comment on the title of the job offered to Giggs, who made 963 appearances for the club, but anything other than assistant manager would effectively be a step down.

It is understood that the post is aimed at connecting the Under 21s with the first-team.

No decision was reached on Wednesday about the matter.

Sportsmail understands United retain hope that Giggs will remain at the club and want him to stay but do not want to place him under any pressure to do so and that the feeling at Carrington is that the decision has to be his.

Giggs has returned from a break in Dubai, where he has mulled over his options in the desert sunshine.

Leaving the club he has represented for the majority of his life is a huge wrench and while the opportunity to work with Mourinho would further bolster Giggs' CV he is thought to feel that he is now ready to make his managerial bow.

There is also an element of a gentleman's understanding, that would have seen the former winger take over from Van Gaal, being reneged upon.

Giggs, who made his first-team debut for United as a teenager, rejected a new role under Mourinho
Giggs enjoyed an illustrious playing career at Old Trafford, winning a staggering 34 trophies before retiring
Giggs is understood to be dissatisfied with the new role offered to him between the Under 21s and first-team

One source close to Giggs said they would be 'very, very surprised' to see him stay at Old Trafford given the sequence of events.

If Giggs is to make the big move, there are currently a host of hotseat vacancies in the nearby area for the Salford-based coach.

Westward on the M62, Everton remain searching for a replacement for Roberto Martinez while in the Championship Blackburn Rovers and Leeds United are on the lookout, although the prospect of Giggs taking over at Elland Road is unlikely at best.

Down in League One, Oldham Athletic, supported by Giggs' fellow Class of '92 member Paul Scholes, are also managerless but a move to Boundary Park would again be a surprise.

Giggs, part of United's famed Class of '92, will be looking for his first full-time management position
